Instagram Quiet mode is now Sleep mode: how to turn it on (2026)
Instagram's Quiet mode is still there, under a new name: Sleep mode. Meta says the feature launched as Quiet mode in January 2023 and was renamed later. To turn it on, go to your profile, tap the menu at the top right, then Time management › Sleep mode, and pick the days and hours. During that time Instagram pauses your notifications and sends an auto-reply to people who message you. It does not lock the app, so you can still open Reels at 1 a.m. If you want Reels gone at night as well, minulo can hide them for free.

| Option | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Sleep mode | Pauses Instagram notifications on a schedule, auto-replies to DMs, shows a moon icon instead of the green dot, and gives you a summary when it ends. | You can still use Instagram and watch Reels. Up to 24 hours a day. |
| Pause push notifications | Stops Instagram push notifications for a length of time you pick. | No auto-reply. The app still opens. |
| Screen Time Schedule (iPhone) | Makes Instagram unavailable during the hours you set. | It blocks the whole app, DMs included. You can turn it off yourself unless someone else holds the passcode. |
| minulo (free, iPhone) | Opens Instagram's website with Reels, Explore and suggested posts hidden. DMs keep working. | If minulo also locks the official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. |
Where did Quiet mode go?
On January 19, 2023, Meta launched Quiet mode on Instagram: it turned off notifications and sent an auto-reply to DMs, so you could focus on things like studying or sleep. In an update dated January 28, 2025, Meta added: "At launch, Sleep mode was called Quiet mode, but its name has since changed." So if you search your settings for Quiet mode and find nothing, look for Sleep mode.
How to turn on Sleep mode on iPhone
- Tap Profile or your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap Menu at the top right.
- In Settings and activity, tap Time management.
- Tap Sleep mode and turn the toggle on.
- Choose the days and times you want it on.
- Tap the arrow at the top left. Your changes are saved automatically.
To turn it off, go back to the same screen and switch the toggle off. Instagram says you can set Sleep mode for up to 24 hours each day.
What Sleep mode does and doesn't do
While it is on, Instagram pauses your notifications, your activity status changes to "In sleep mode", and the green dot becomes a moon icon. People who message you get an auto-reply saying you won't be notified about their messages during this time. When it ends, you get a summary of what came in. Instagram also shows a reminder to close the app.
What it doesn't do is stop you. Instagram's help says most people can still use the app and send and receive messages in Sleep mode. If the problem is the "one more Reel" in bed, Sleep mode only removes the notification that pulled you in.
Teen Accounts are put in Sleep mode from 10 PM to 7 AM by default, and a parent who supervises the account can choose to block Instagram during that time.
Sleep mode or Pause push notifications?
If you just want quiet for a few hours without an auto-reply, go to Profile › Menu › Notifications (under How you use Instagram) and turn on Pause push notifications, then pick a time. Below it you can also switch off single kinds of notifications. Sleep mode is better for a fixed nightly routine, because it repeats on its own and tells people why you are not answering.
Keep DMs at night but lose Reels with minulo
minulo opens Instagram's official website inside an iPhone app with the Reels and Explore tabs and suggested posts hidden, so a late reply to a friend doesn't turn into an hour of Reels. Hiding is free. minulo can also lock the official Instagram app with Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block. Scheduled blocks every night are part of minulo Pro, as is Hard Mode.
Be aware of one trade-off: while the official app is locked, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo itself sends no notifications. If you need to hear about DMs at night, leave the official app unlocked and use Sleep mode or Instagram's notification settings instead. minulo is iPhone only.
