How to turn off the TikTok For You page on iPhone (and keep your DMs)
We could not find a setting in TikTok's help that turns off the For You feed. It is the first feed you see when you open TikTok. What TikTok offers instead: Refresh your For You feed, Not interested, Filter keywords, Manage topics, and a daily screen time limit that you get past by typing a passcode shown on the screen. All of these change what For You shows, but none of them removes it. To use TikTok without For You, open it in an app that hides it. In minulo, hiding For You is free and your messages keep working.
This page is written by Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo. Facts about TikTok and iPhone settings come from the sources listed below, checked on 2026-10-23. Menu names can change with app and iOS updates.
| Method | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh your For You feed (Settings and privacy › Content preferences) | Shows you some popular posts, and what you like and comment on rebuilds your recommendations. | It can't be undone. For You stays and fills up again as you watch. Your Following feed, profile, inbox and ads are not changed. |
| Not interested (press and hold a post) | Shows you fewer posts like that one. From Details you can also filter the post's hashtags. | One post at a time. |
| Filter keywords (Content preferences › Filter keywords) | Removes posts with a word or hashtag from the feeds you choose. Smart filter also catches similar words. | Up to 100 keywords. Some keywords can't be filtered, and some feeds may not offer it depending on where you signed up. |
| Manage topics (Content preferences › Manage topics) | Sliders for how much of each topic, such as sports or food, you see. | Only changes For You, and it can take a while to take effect. |
| Following feed and Friends Tab | Following shows creators you follow. Friends shows friends, accounts you follow and suggested accounts. | TikTok still opens on For You, and when you run out of posts here it suggests going to For You. |
| Daily screen time (Settings and privacy › Time and well-being › Screen time) | Notifies you when you reach the daily limit you set. | To keep watching, you type the passcode shown on the screen. It is a reminder, not a lock. |
| iPhone Screen Time | Limits the whole TikTok app. | It can't target For You, and your messages are blocked too. |
| minulo (free) | Opens TikTok with For You hidden, or with every tab hidden except messages. Messages and Following open from the minulo home screen. | The official TikTok app itself does not change. minulo can lock it with Screen Time, but its notifications don't arrive while it is locked. |
How to refresh your For You feed
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Content preferences.
- Tap Refresh your For You feed and follow the steps on the screen.
In some regions you can also start it from a post: press and hold the post or tap Share, then tap Why this video › Adjust your For You › Refresh your For You feed. TikTok then shows you some popular posts, and your likes and comments on them shape the new recommendations. A refresh can't be undone, and it only affects For You.
How to filter keywords out of For You
- Tap Profile, then the Menu ☰ button.
- Tap Settings and privacy › Content preferences › Filter keywords.
- Tap Add keyword, type a word or hashtag, and choose the feeds to filter it from, such as For You and Following.
- Tap Save. Turn on Smart filter if you also want similar words and variations removed.
You can add up to 100 keywords. TikTok says not every variation is caught and some keywords can't be filtered.
How to tell TikTok you're not interested
- On a post in For You, press and hold, or tap Share.
- Tap Not interested. TikTok shows you fewer posts like it.
- To filter that post's hashtags as well, tap Details, choose an option, tap Details again, select the hashtags and tap Submit.
For broader changes, Manage topics under Content preferences has a slider for each topic. TikTok says it only affects For You and can take some time.
How to set a daily screen time limit on TikTok
- Tap Profile, then the Menu ☰ button.
- Tap Settings and privacy › Time and well-being › Screen time.
- Turn on Daily screen time and pick a limit.
When you hit the limit, TikTok notifies you and you can close the app or type the passcode shown on the screen to keep going. For users aged 13 to 17 it is on by default at 1 hour. On the same screen, Sleep hours mutes TikTok's push notifications after the time you set.
What doesn't turn off For You
- Refreshing the feed. It resets what For You recommends. The feed is still there and learns from you again.
- Not interested, keyword filters and topics. They remove some posts. For You keeps playing everything else.
- Switching to Following or Friends. You choose it each time, the app still opens on For You, and TikTok points you back to For You when those feeds run out.
- Turning off personalized feeds. TikTok's help says this is only available in some regions, such as the EU. For You then becomes a Popular feed of popular posts, so there is still a feed to scroll.
- TikTok's daily limit. You get past it by typing a passcode shown on the screen.
- iPhone Screen Time. It limits the whole app, so your messages stop too.
Hide For You for free with minulo
minulo opens TikTok's website inside the app. You log in on TikTok's own login page, and minulo does not receive or store your password.
- Install minulo from the App Store.
- On the home screen, tap Add a service and choose TikTok.
- Tap the gear next to TikTok and turn on Recommendations to hide For You. To keep only messages, turn on Every tab but DMs instead (this hides Following too).
- Optional: open the Block tab, allow Screen Time and choose TikTok in Apps to block. Tapping the TikTok icon then shows a Blocked screen with an Open in minulo button.
Hiding stays on until you turn it off, so there is nothing to redo. Locking the official app is free for up to 2 hours per block, and you can start it again as often as you like. While the official app is locked, its notifications don't arrive, so lock it only when you can miss them, for example while studying or at night. minulo Pro ($9.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US) adds schedules by day and time, blocks longer than 2 hours, Hard Mode, which makes turning a block off take a few minutes on purpose, and multiple block lists.
Can you turn off the For You page on TikTok?
We could not find a way in TikTok's help as of October 2026. For You is the first feed you see when you open TikTok, and TikTok's tools (Refresh your For You feed, Not interested, Filter keywords and Manage topics) change what it shows without removing it. To use TikTok without For You, open it in an app that hides it, such as minulo, where this is free.
What does Refresh your For You feed do?
It starts your For You recommendations over. TikTok shows you some popular posts, and what you like and comment on shapes the feed from there. It only affects For You, not your Following feed, profile, inbox or ads, and it can't be undone. You find it under Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Content preferences.
Can I use TikTok with only the Following feed?
Not in the TikTok app. It still opens on For You, and when you run out of posts in Following or the Friends Tab, TikTok suggests going to For You. In minulo you can hide For You, and Messages and Following open straight from its home screen.
Does TikTok's daily screen time limit stop you from scrolling?
Not by itself. When you reach the limit, TikTok notifies you and you can close the app or type the passcode shown on the screen to keep watching, so it works as a reminder. For users aged 13 to 17 it is on by default at 1 hour.
How do I stop scrolling TikTok but keep my DMs?
Limiting the TikTok app with iPhone Screen Time blocks your messages too. Instead, open TikTok in an app that hides For You and keeps messages, such as minulo. Hiding is free, and minulo can also lock the official TikTok app for up to 2 hours per block for free, so tapping its icon sends you to minulo.
