Phone lock box alternatives: iPhone settings and apps that stop scrolling (2026)
With minulo you don't have to lock your phone in a box: it hides only Reels and Shorts, and your messages, DMs and maps keep working (hiding is free).
A phone lock box keeps your phone inside until a timer runs out. It is a reliable way to stop reaching for your phone while you study or work, but while it is shut you can't take calls, reply to anyone or look anything up. That gets awkward on days when your team or your job may message you, or when you need a dictionary or maps. Here are ways to stop on the iPhone itself, without a box, from strongest to lightest.
This page is written by Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo. One of the options compared is my own app, so keep that in mind. I did not check any specific lock box product. iPhone settings come from Apple's iPhone User Guide (iOS 27 and iOS 26) and minulo's features from the minulo website, checked on 2026-11-02.
| Option | What stops | What still works | How to end it early |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone lock box | The whole phone | Nothing while it is in the box | Wait for the timer (depends on the box) |
| iPhone Screen Time Schedule (Downtime in iOS 26) | Apps not in Always Allowed | Always Allowed apps and contacts | Enter the Screen Time passcode |
| minulo block | The official apps you choose | Other apps, and social networks inside minulo (with Reels and Shorts still hidden) | Free blocks last up to 2 hours. Hard Mode (Pro) takes a few minutes to leave |
| Hiding with minulo | Reels, Explore, suggested posts, Shorts and TikTok For You | DMs, search and the people you follow | Stays on until you turn it off |
Use iPhone settings instead of a box
- In the Settings app, tap Screen Time, tap Screen Time Schedule, then turn on Schedule (iOS 27).
- Tap Add Schedule, choose the days, and set a time window for studying or work.
- In Settings › Screen Time › Always Allowed, add the apps and people you don't want to lose, such as Phone, your messaging app and Maps.
- Tap Passcode & Management, then Lock Screen Time Settings, and enter a four-digit passcode. If a family member or friend enters it for you, it is much harder to undo on your own.
In iOS 26, set the time under Downtime › Scheduled, then turn on Block at Downtime. Apple's guide says that when Block at Downtime is off, you only see a reminder and can keep using the apps.
If it is only social media you want to stop, use minulo
If the reason you want a lock box is that you keep opening Instagram or YouTube while you study, stopping social media is enough.
- Get minulo from the App Store.
- Open Instagram, YouTube or TikTok inside minulo and sign in on each network's own login page. minulo never receives your password.
- Tap the gear next to Instagram and turn on Reels and Explore tabs or Suggested posts. Do the same for YouTube to hide Shorts and recommendations, and for TikTok to hide For You. Hiding is free.
- In the Block tab, choose the official Instagram, YouTube or TikTok app and start a block. Tapping the icon then shows a blocking screen, and Open in minulo takes you to minulo. Free blocks last up to 2 hours.
A free block lasts up to 2 hours, and you can start the next one right after it ends. Schedules that switch on by day and time, blocks longer than 2 hours, and Hard Mode, which makes leaving take a few minutes on purpose (copy a sentence, answer some mental arithmetic, wait 60 seconds), are in minulo Pro (US $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year).
Here are minulo's weak points too. Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo; the official apps don't change. While minulo is locking an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo doesn't send them for it. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls don't work. minulo is an iPhone app, and there is also a Mac app that works with Safari and Chrome. There is no Android version yet. It is new and has few ratings so far. See what minulo can't do.
When a box is the better fit
If you want to stop touching your phone at all, or if just seeing a notification breaks your focus, a box suits you better. minulo and Screen Time both stop things while the phone is still in your hand. You can also use both: the box for a few hours before an exam, and iPhone settings for everyday studying and evenings.
Is a phone lock box or an app better?
It depends on what you want to stop. If you want to put the whole phone away, use a box. If you want to keep calls, messages and maps and stop only social media, use an app. minulo hides only Reels and Shorts and keeps DMs working (hiding is free).
What happens to messages while my phone is in a lock box?
While it is in the box you can't use the phone, so you can't answer calls or messages. If you want to stay reachable, you can use an iPhone Screen Time Schedule and keep only the apps and contacts in Always Allowed available.
Can an app make it hard to turn off by myself?
Screen Time for yourself can be changed by anyone who knows the passcode. minulo's Hard Mode (Pro) takes three steps to leave: copy a sentence, answer some mental arithmetic and wait 60 seconds, so turning it off takes a few minutes on purpose.
I only want to stop social media while studying for exams
To stop it only while you study, use a minulo block (free for up to 2 hours per block) or a Screen Time Schedule. For exam season, see How to Quit Social Media Before Exams.
