How to block Instagram, TikTok or YouTube for one hour on iPhone (2026)

minulo can lock the official Instagram, TikTok or YouTube app with Screen Time for free, up to 2 hours per block, which covers an hour of study or a few 25-minute focus rounds. iPhone's own Screen Time has no button that blocks an app for exactly one hour: App Limits count your use across the day, and Downtime turned on by hand runs until tomorrow. A Downtime schedule can block a set window, but you choose the times in advance in Settings. minulo has no Pomodoro timer of its own, so pair it with any timer you like.

Why Screen Time can't block an app for exactly one hour

Apple describes App Limits as daily time limits. You set them in Settings, Screen Time, App Limits, Add Limit: pick a category or single apps, tap Next and set the amount of time allowed. That counts your use across the day, so it can't say "no Instagram from 3 to 4 pm". Apple also notes that, by default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once they are reached.

Downtime is closer. Under Settings, Screen Time, Downtime, Apple offers Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow or Scheduled. The first starts right away but runs until the next day, and the second needs start and end times set ahead. On iOS 27 the same idea becomes Screen Time Schedule with Time Allowances by category, which Apple says needs iOS 27 or later on all your Apple devices.

Block a set window with Downtime

  1. Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then Always Allowed, and add the apps you need while you study, such as your messaging app.
  2. Go back, tap Downtime, turn on Scheduled, choose Every Day or Customize Days, and set the start and end times.
  3. Set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at Downtime.

Apple says that with Block at Downtime on, restricted apps can't be opened during downtime and appear dimmed with an hourglass. With it off, you only see a reminder. This works when your study hour is the same every day. For a one-off hour, it means editing the schedule each time. If one chat app has to stay open, see block only Instagram during Downtime.

Lock the apps for one study session with minulo

  1. Install minulo, open the Block tab and allow Screen Time.
  2. Choose the official Instagram, TikTok or YouTube app. Apps you don't choose stay open.
  3. Start the block. On the free plan it lasts up to 2 hours, and you can start another as soon as it ends.
  4. If you need the app for a moment, tap Take a break and pick the minutes. The block turns back on by itself when time is up.

One free block covers an hour of reading or a few 25-minute rounds. minulo doesn't count rounds or ring at the break, so keep using your own timer for that. While the apps are locked, you can still open Instagram inside minulo with Reels hidden to answer a DM. Hiding is free with no time limit. minulo Pro adds blocks longer than 2 hours, schedules by day and time, Hard Mode and multiple block lists.

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. minulo is for iPhone, with a Mac version that works in Safari and Chrome, and there is no Android version yet. It is new, with few ratings. Can I block Instagram for just one hour on iPhone?

Yes, with minulo, which locks the official Instagram app with Screen Time for free, up to 2 hours per block. iPhone's own Screen Time has no one-hour button: App Limits count daily use, and Downtime turned on by hand lasts until tomorrow.

Can I set Screen Time to block an app for 25 minutes?

Not as a one-off timer. App Limits set a daily amount, and Downtime runs on a schedule or until tomorrow. You can schedule a Downtime window for your study time, but you set it in advance in Settings.

Is there a Pomodoro app that blocks Instagram?

Several focus timer apps say they block apps during a session. We haven't tested them, so check their App Store pages. minulo has no timer of its own, but its free block keeps the official apps locked for up to 2 hours, which covers a few 25-minute rounds.

Can I still reply to messages while Instagram is blocked?

With minulo, yes. Open Instagram inside minulo with Reels hidden and use your DMs there. The official app's notifications don't arrive while it is blocked.

What if I really need the app during the block?

In minulo, tap Take a break and choose the minutes. The official app opens for that long, and the block turns back on by itself when time is up.

Can the block start by itself every day?

With Downtime, yes, on the schedule you set. In minulo, schedules by day and time are part of minulo Pro. On the free plan you start each block yourself.
