How to stop watching Reels and Shorts while studying: keep your messages, lose the feed (iPhone, 2026)

Turning your phone off completely while studying is hard when class group chats, clubs and friends all reach you through it. The usual trap is opening Instagram to reply and getting pulled into Reels or Shorts. iPhone Focus only mutes notifications, and Screen Time blocks whole apps, DMs included. If you want to keep messages and avoid only the video feeds, the practical setup is a focus timer to split your time plus an app that hides only Reels and Shorts.

This page is written by the developer of minulo. iPhone Screen Time is based on Apple's support pages, and other apps on their App Store descriptions as of October 16, 2026. Menu names can change with app and iOS updates.

MethodWhat it stopsMessages and DMs?How easy to undo
iPhone FocusNotifications only. Apps still open.Yes. You can let only chosen people and apps through.Open Instagram yourself and Reels are right there.
iPhone Screen TimeWhole apps (by category on iOS 27), by schedule or daily limit.Blocked apps lose DMs too. Messages and similar apps can go in Always Allowed. Can be ignored by default. Stays put if someone else sets the Screen Time passcode.
Phone in another room / time-locking containerThe whole phone.No. Nothing reaches you until the time is up.Hardest to undo. You'll miss urgent messages too.
Focus timer (Forest, etc.)Rewards you with a growing tree for not touching your phone. Forest can also block apps outside an allow list (iOS 16 or later).Allowed apps keep working in Forest. You can quit, but losing the tree is the brake.
Hide only the endless feeds (minulo, SocialLite, UNDOOMED, Awhile)Reels, Shorts and suggested posts only.Yes. DMs and friends' posts stay.Hiding itself has no time window. minulo can lock the official apps with Screen Time and send you to minulo.

Why you can't just turn social media off while studying

Class updates, club plans and friends often come through Instagram DMs, WhatsApp or iMessage, so cutting everything isn't realistic. The real problem is opening an app to reply, seeing Reels or Shorts, and looking up thirty minutes later.

So what you want to stop isn't messaging but the endless video feed. When you compare methods, look at how much they block, whether messages stay, and how easy it is to undo them yourself.

iPhone Focus and Screen Time

Focus mutes notifications. It helps cut interruptions, but it doesn't stop you from opening apps. Open Instagram yourself and Reels are there as usual.

Screen Time sets how long or when you can use apps: App Limits and Downtime up to iOS 26, Time Allowances and Screen Time Schedules from iOS 27. It works on whole apps (categories on iOS 27), so blocking Instagram blocks its DMs too. Apple notes limits can be ignored by default; to make them stick, have someone else set your Screen Time passcode. Apps you still need during Downtime can go in Always Allowed.

Put distance between you and the phone

Leaving your phone in another room or locking it in a time-locking container needs no setup and works. The catch is that messages can't reach you either, so it doesn't suit days when you're waiting to hear from family or friends. It fits the last few hours before a test.

Focus timer apps such as Forest

Forest grows a tree while you leave your phone alone. During a session it can block apps outside your allow list (iOS 16 or later), and Time Guard blocks on a schedule.

Timers are good at creating phone-free time, but once you stop the timer and open an app, Reels show up as usual. They don't stop a break from turning into an hour of scrolling.

Hide only Reels and Shorts with minulo

To stay reachable without losing hours, you can remove just the endless feeds. minulo, SocialLite, UNDOOMED and Awhile open social networks inside the app without Reels or recommendations.

minulo opens 10 networks, including Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, with Reels, Shorts and suggested posts hidden. DMs, friends' posts and search keep working. You sign in on each network's own login page, and minulo never sees your password. It can lock the official apps with iPhone Screen Time; when you try to open one, the blocked screen offers to open minulo instead. Hiding is free. Schedules, blocks longer than 2 hours and Locked Mode (no instant unblock) are in minulo Pro.

minulo launched in September 2026 and has few ratings so far. There is no Android version.

A study routine that combines a timer and hidden feeds

One example setup that keeps you reachable without the video feeds:

  1. Before you start: In minulo, block the official apps that pull you into Reels or Shorts, such as Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Messaging apps you leave off the list keep working.
  2. While you focus: Pick a block of 25 to 50 minutes with a timer such as Forest and put your phone out of reach. Use a Focus so only family or class group chats can reach you.
  3. On breaks: Reply to DMs inside minulo. With no Reels or suggestions on screen, you can reply and close. A Reel a friend sends can be watched for five minutes with Open for 5 min.
  4. The night before an exam: If you still keep opening apps, add the phone-in-another-room method or have a family member set your Screen Time passcode.
  5. Before bed: Use Screen Time's Downtime (Screen Time Schedules on iOS 27) or a minulo Pro schedule so apps stop on their own at night.

How do I stop using my phone while studying?

The surest way is to put your phone in another room or a time-locking container, but then messages can't reach you either. If you need to stay reachable, mute notifications with a Focus, split your time with a focus timer such as Forest, and hide Reels and Shorts so a quick reply doesn't turn into scrolling.

Is there an app that limits social media only during exam study?

To block whole apps, use iPhone Screen Time or Forest's in-session blocking (iOS 16 or later). If you want to keep DMs and group chats, an app that hides only Reels and Shorts, such as minulo or SocialLite, fits better.

I set Screen Time, but I keep turning it off myself.

According to Apple, Screen Time limits can be ignored by default. Set a Screen Time passcode and have someone else, such as a family member, choose it, so you can't undo it yourself.

Can I block Instagram Reels but keep iMessage and WhatsApp?

Screen Time can't block Reels inside Instagram. minulo opens Instagram with Reels and Explore hidden, and DMs keep working. Messaging apps you don't add to minulo's block list keep working as usual.
