Screen Time limit not working for Instagram on iPhone? How to fix it (2026)
When a Screen Time limit for Instagram doesn't stop you, there are five usual causes: limits can be ignored by default, you are opening instagram.com in Safari, iOS 27 changed how limits work, devices in Family Sharing are not up to date, or Instagram is on the Always Allowed list. Check them in this order.
This page is written by the developer of minulo. The steps are based on the Apple Support pages listed below, checked on October 9, 2026. Screens differ between iOS 26 and iOS 27.
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The limit screen appears but you can keep using Instagram | Apple says Screen Time limits can be ignored by default. | Set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at End of Limit for the limit (iOS 26 and earlier). Ask someone else to choose the passcode. |
| The app is blocked, but instagram.com opens in Safari | App limits apply to the app. | Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content > Limit Adult Websites, then add instagram.com under Never Allow (iOS 26). |
| After updating to iOS 27, App Limits is gone | iOS 27 replaced it with Time Allowances and Screen Time Schedules, which need iOS 27 or later on all your Apple devices. | Go to Screen Time > Time Allowances and set time for a category such as Social Media. |
| Limits don't apply on your child's iPhone | With Family Sharing, all devices in the group need the latest software, and limits should be set from the parent's device. | Update every device, then set your child's Screen Time again from Settings > Family on your device. Check that your child has their own Apple Account. |
| Instagram still works during Downtime | Apps on Always Allowed stay available regardless of Downtime and limits. | Go to Screen Time > Always Allowed and remove Instagram. |
If it still doesn't work
Update iOS, restart your iPhone, and delete and recreate the Instagram limit. These are general steps, not instructions from Apple's pages.
If you only want to stop Reels, not all of Instagram
Screen Time works on whole apps (categories on iOS 27). Blocking Instagram also blocks your DMs.
minulo opens Instagram's official website inside the app with Reels, Explore and suggested posts hidden, while DMs, friends' posts and search keep working. minulo also uses iPhone Screen Time to lock the official app, so on an iPhone where Screen Time itself isn't working, that part may not work either.
Why is my Instagram Screen Time limit not working?
Most often because Screen Time limits can be ignored by default. Set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at End of Limit so the app can't be used without the passcode. Also check Safari (instagram.com), Always Allowed and, on iOS 27, Time Allowances.
Why can I still open Instagram in Safari?
An app limit applies to the app. On iOS 26, add instagram.com under Never Allow in Content & Privacy Restrictions > Web Content. On iOS 27, a Time Allowance also covers a website the app declares as associated.
Can Screen Time limit only Instagram Reels?
No. Screen Time limits apply to whole apps (categories on iOS 27), and website blocking applies to whole addresses. To stop only Reels, use an app that hides them.
Why don't Screen Time limits work on my child's iPhone?
Update every device in your Family Sharing group to the latest software and set Screen Time from the parent's device. The new iOS 27 controls only work when every device in the group runs iOS 27 or later.
