How to Stop YouTube Addiction Without Deleting the App: Drop Shorts and Home Recommendations (iPhone, 2026)

Delete YouTube and you also lose lectures, your subscriptions and the videos you look things up with. What eats the time is usually not the whole app but the endless Shorts and Home recommendations.

The YouTube app has a break reminder, a Shorts feed limit and an Autoplay switch. All three can be dismissed or ignored, though. Open YouTube in minulo and Shorts and Home recommendations stay hidden while Subscriptions, Watch later and search keep working. Hiding is free.

Written by Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo, so weigh the comparison with that in mind. Facts about YouTube come from YouTube Help, and iPhone steps come from Apple's iPhone User Guide (iOS 27 and iOS 26), checked on 2026-11-02. Menu names can change with app and iOS updates.

minulo (free)Opens YouTube with the parts you pick hidden: Shorts, Home recommendations, commentsOnly inside minulo. The official app doesn't change

1. Turn on the break reminder

  1. In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings, then General.
  3. Turn on the switch next to Remind me to take a break, pick how often, and tap OK.

According to YouTube Help, the video pauses until you close the reminder or resume playback, so closing it lets you keep watching. It starts on for users aged 13 to 17 and off for users 18 and over. It works only on phones, not tablets. Closing the app, signing out, switching devices or pausing a video for more than 30 minutes resets the timer.

2. Use the Shorts feed limit for Shorts

  1. Tap the You tab, then Settings.
  2. Tap Time management, then Shorts feed limit, and pick a limit. Zero is one of the options.

YouTube Help says that when you reach the limit, a reminder appears in the Shorts feed and you can dismiss it or ignore your limit. What still shows up at zero is covered in YouTube Shorts Feed Limit: How to Set It to 0.

3. Cut down Autoplay and Home recommendations

Tap your profile picture, then Settings at the top right, then Autoplay, and switch it off. The next video then won't start by itself. Google says Autoplay can be set differently on each device.

On Home, YouTube Help says that if you have little relevant watch history and have chosen not to get recommendations based on it, features like recommendations on the YouTube homepage are removed. See How to Turn Off YouTube Autoplay and Recommendations and YouTube Watch History Off: What Happens to Home.

4. Set a time limit with Screen Time (whole app)

In Apple's iOS 27 guide, Screen Time › Time Allowances sets how long you can use each category of apps per day, such as Entertainment or Social Media. On iOS 26, you tap App Limits › Add Limit and set a time for a category or for individual apps.

Either way the limit covers the whole YouTube app, so lectures and subscriptions are blocked too. Apple's iOS 26 guide also notes that by default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached.

5. Use YouTube with Shorts and Home recommendations hidden (minulo)

  1. Install minulo, tap Add a service on the home screen and choose YouTube.
  2. Tap the gear next to YouTube and turn on Shorts and Home recommendations. You can hide Comments too if you like.
  3. Open the videos you want from Subscriptions, Watch later or search. With the free setting Send Shorts links to the normal player, a Short someone sends you plays in the regular player (details).
  4. If you keep opening the official YouTube app out of habit, choose it in the Block tab. Blocking is free for up to 2 hours per block, and Open in minulo on the block screen takes you to YouTube without Shorts.

Hiding is free with no time limit. When YouTube changes its screens, something hidden can come back for a while. Schedules by day and time, longer blocks and Hard mode are part of minulo Pro (US $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year).

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. minulo is for iPhone, with a Mac version that works in Safari and Chrome, and there is no Android version yet. It is new, with few ratings. See what minulo can't do.

Do I have to delete YouTube to stop watching so much?

Not necessarily. The time usually goes to Shorts and Home recommendations. Open YouTube in minulo to hide just those and keep Subscriptions, Watch later and search.

Where do I turn on the YouTube break reminder?

YouTube Help says to tap your profile picture, then Settings, then General, turn on Remind me to take a break and pick how often. It works only on phones.

Can I quit just YouTube Shorts?

In the YouTube app you can set the Shorts feed limit to zero, but it is a reminder you can dismiss or ignore. In minulo, the Shorts shelf and Shorts tab are gone and regular videos still play.

Why don't YouTube's reminders stop me?

Both the break reminder and the Shorts feed limit are built to be closed or ignored, so when you are tired or bored it is easy to tap past them. Keeping Shorts from showing up in the first place leaves less to resist.

If I block YouTube with Screen Time, do lectures get blocked too?

Yes. Screen Time covers the whole YouTube app. To keep lectures and drop only Shorts, open YouTube in minulo.
