How to stop brain rot from Reels, Shorts and TikTok on iPhone (2026)

Brain rot isn't a medical term. Oxford University Press named it Word of the Year for 2024 and defines it as the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially from overconsumption of trivial online content. What brain rot means
Oxford University Press chose "brain rot" as its 2024 Word of the Year after a public vote of more than 37,000 people, and said its use rose by 230% between 2023 and 2024. Its definition starts with "the supposed deterioration", which tells you it describes a feeling more than a diagnosis.
What the research says
In a 2025 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin, Nguyen and colleagues combined 71 studies covering 98,299 people. Heavier short video use was associated with poorer attention and inhibitory control. The review shows a link, not proof that short videos cause it. Cut the clips without leaving your friends
- Reset what the feed shows. On Instagram, use Reset suggested content under Content preferences. On YouTube, clear or pause watch history.
- Hide Reels and Shorts in minulo. Install minulo, sign in to Instagram, YouTube or TikTok inside it, and turn off Reels, Explore, suggested posts, Shorts and For You. Hiding is free.
- Lock the official apps. In minulo's Block tab, allow Screen Time and choose the official apps. A free block lasts up to 2 hours, and you can start another when it ends.
- Keep messages in minulo. Reply to DMs inside minulo. Reels friends send you open only after a pause, if you choose to watch.

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. There is no medical timeline for it. In one 2025 experiment, people whose mobile internet was blocked for two weeks showed better sustained attention, but that blocked all mobile internet, not only short videos.
Do I have to delete Instagram and TikTok?
