How to reduce screen time as a student on iPhone without missing the group chat (2026)

This page is for students who want to plan phone time around class and study hours. Cut the feeds, not the messages: block social apps during class and study hours with Screen Time, keep Messages allowed, and use minulo to hide Reels and Shorts while Instagram DMs keep working; hiding is free.

Most of a student's phone time isn't the problem. Group chats, class apps and maps are things you need. The hours that slip away are usually in Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Apple's Screen Time can block apps at set times, but Apple says limits can be ignored by default once reached, so the setup below includes the step that makes them stick.

Step 1: see where the time goes

On iOS 27, go to Settings › Screen Time › Daily Average and tap Week. The report lists your most used apps and, further down, how many times you picked up the phone. Start with the one or two apps at the top. For context, studies that read college students' phone logs found averages of about 4 to 7 hours a day; see average screen time for college students.

Step 2: block social apps during class and study hours

On iOS 26, go to Settings › Screen Time › Downtime and tap Scheduled. Choose Customize Days to set different hours for class days and weekends. During downtime only calls, messages and the apps you choose to allow are available, and you get a reminder 5 minutes before it starts.

By default you can keep using apps during downtime. To make it a real block, set a Screen Time passcode, then turn on Block at Downtime. Blocked apps appear dimmed with an hourglass icon. Some students ask a roommate to set the passcode, because a code you know is easy to type at midnight.

On iOS 27, Apple replaces this with Screen Time Schedule and Time Allowances: you make time windows for the day and choose which categories, such as Social Media, are available in each. A Time Allowance also covers a website the app declares as associated.

Step 3: keep classmates reachable

Under Screen Time › Always Allowed, add the people and apps you need even during blocked hours, such as Messages, your class app or a family member. If your class group chat lives in Instagram DMs, allowing Instagram also allows Reels, which is the gap minulo fills.

Step 4: batch notifications

Go to Settings › Notifications › Scheduled Summary, turn it on, pick the times, and choose which apps go into the summary. You can also turn off Allow Notifications for any single app.

Step 5: keep DMs, lose the feed (minulo)

  1. Check where the time goes. On iOS 27, open Settings, Screen Time and Daily Average, and look at the most used apps and Pickups.
  2. Schedule study hours. On iOS 26, turn on a Downtime schedule with Customize Days, set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at Downtime. On iOS 27, use a Screen Time Schedule with Time Allowances.
  3. Allow what you need. Add Messages and the people you must reach to Always Allowed.
  4. Batch notifications. Turn on Scheduled Summary under Settings and Notifications.
  5. Hide Reels and Shorts in minulo. Install minulo, sign in to Instagram, YouTube or TikTok inside it, and turn off Reels, Explore, suggested posts, Shorts and For You. DMs keep working. Hiding is free.
  6. Lock the official apps. In minulo's Block tab, allow Screen Time and choose the official apps. A free block lasts up to 2 hours, and you can start another when it ends.

minulo Pro (US $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year) adds blocks longer than 2 hours, schedules by day and time and Hard Mode.

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. minulo is for iPhone, with a Mac version that works in Safari and Chrome, and there is no Android version yet. It is new, with few ratings.
