Dopamine Detox for Your Phone: Keep Texts, Drop Reels and Shorts (iPhone, 2026)

This page is the how-to: what to cut on your phone, and when, without giving the phone up. A dopamine detox doesn’t flush dopamine out of your body. According to an article from Harvard Medical School’s health publishing arm, the psychiatrist who came up with it meant a practice based on cognitive behavioral therapy: stepping back from stimuli you keep reaching for.

So you don’t need to give up your phone. Pick the one thing you reach for most, usually the endless Reels and Shorts, take it out, and set fixed times such as the end of the day or one day on the weekend. minulo is an iPhone app that hides Reels and Shorts while your messages and DMs keep working. Hiding is free.

This page is written by Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo. One of the options it covers is my own app, so keep that in mind. The meaning of a dopamine detox comes from a Harvard Health Publishing article (2020-02-26), and iPhone settings come from Apple’s iPhone User Guide (iOS 27 and iOS 26), both checked on 2026-11-02. This is not medical advice. If your phone use is making daily life hard, consider talking to a professional.

What a dopamine detox originally meant

In a 2020 Harvard Health Publishing article, Dr. Peter Grinspoon explains that dopamine fasting was created by California psychiatrist Dr. Cameron Sepah. The article says many people have misunderstood the science, and that a dopamine “fast” doesn't actually lower your dopamine levels.

The original aim is to step back from behaviors you do on autopilot. By letting yourself feel bored or lonely, or by finding simpler things to enjoy, you get back the choice of whether to do them. The article notes that this sounds a lot like many mindfulness practices and good sleep hygiene, such as not looking at screens before bed.

A dopamine detox on your phone: drop only Reels and Shorts

Switching your phone off cuts you off from people, so it rarely lasts. Instead, pick just one thing to drop. When you look at the apps you use most in Screen Time, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok are often near the top, and inside them the time goes to endless Reels, Shorts and recommended feeds.

  1. Pick one thing to drop: In the Settings app, open Screen Time, look at the apps you use most, and note which screen in each app takes your time.
  2. Set an end-of-day window: On iOS 27, tap Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, add an evening time window and choose which Time Allowance categories are available in it. On iOS 26, schedule Downtime for the evening and turn on Block at Downtime (this needs a Screen Time passcode). Add the apps you use to keep in touch to Always Allowed.
  3. Pick one day on the weekend: Spend one day a week without Reels and Shorts, and decide in advance what you'll do with that time. Unplanned time tends to fill up with the phone again.
  4. Remove the places Reels and Shorts appear: Keep your messages and take only Reels and Shorts off the screen. See the minulo steps below.

If you want to try it for a full week, a one-week digital detox that keeps your messages has day-by-day steps.

Drop only Reels and Shorts with minulo

  1. Install minulo from the App Store.
  2. Open Instagram, YouTube or TikTok inside minulo and sign in on each service's own login page. minulo never receives your password.
  3. Inside minulo, Instagram's Reels tab, Explore tab and suggested posts are hidden, and YouTube's Shorts shelf and Shorts tab are gone while normal videos, search and subscriptions stay.
  4. In the Block tab, choose the official Instagram, YouTube or TikTok app and start a block. Opening the official app then shows a block screen, and Open in minulo takes you to the version without Reels so you can still reply to DMs. Free blocks last up to 2 hours each.

Hiding is free with no time limit. Schedules by day and time, blocks longer than 2 hours and Hard mode are part of minulo Pro (US $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year).

Here are minulo's weak points too. Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo doesn't send them for it. Posting stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. minulo is an iPhone app, with a Mac version for Safari and Chrome. There is no Android version yet. See what minulo can't do for details.

How do I do a dopamine detox?

Rather than quitting your phone entirely, pick the one stimulus you reach for most and take it out, then set fixed times such as the end of the day or one weekend day. The Harvard Health article suggests starting in a way that is minimally disruptive to your life.

Does a dopamine detox lower dopamine?

No, according to the Harvard Health article. It says a dopamine “fast” doesn’t actually lower your dopamine levels. The original idea is practice at being less driven by stimuli.

Does a dopamine detox work?

This page could not confirm studies on the dopamine detox itself. In a 2025 trial that blocked mobile internet for two weeks, attention and mental health improved, but screen time went up again afterwards (see the digital detox page).

Do I have to go without my phone?

No. You can keep messaging and drop only endless screens like Reels and Shorts. That makes it easier to keep going.

Is there an app for a dopamine detox?

minulo is an iPhone app that hides Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok For You while keeping DMs. Hiding is free, and blocking the official apps is free for up to 2 hours per block.
