Dopamine detox app for iPhone: what a detox really is and which settings help (2026)

This page is for choosing an app: it compares what Screen Time, hiding apps, grayscale and minulo each take away. No app lowers your dopamine. What an app can do is remove the cues you keep reaching for, and minulo does that for Reels, Shorts and TikTok For You while your DMs keep working; hiding is free.

Harvard Health Publishing looked at the dopamine fasting trend in 2020. Its article says dopamine doesn't actually decrease when you avoid overstimulating activities, so the name is misleading. The psychiatrist it cites, Cameron Sepah, described the idea as a cognitive behavioral therapy based method for being less driven by unhealthy stimuli, and his list of target behaviors includes excessive internet use and gaming. The article criticizes extreme versions that cut out healthy things, and says taking time out for mental rejuvenation is never a bad thing.

What a dopamine detox is, and isn't

Harvard Health's article (Peter Grinspoon, MD, 2020-02-26) makes two points. First, the science in the name is wrong: dopamine doesn't drop because you stop scrolling. Second, the useful part is behavioral. Sepah's version targets specific behaviors that cause you distress and limits them at set times, and the article calls that idea noble, healthy and worthwhile. Avoiding people was never part of it.

So the question for an app isn't whether it lowers dopamine. It is whether it makes one specific habit, such as opening Reels between classes, harder to start.

Remove the cues on iPhone

Move the app off the Home Screen. Touch and hold the app, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. It stays in App Library.

Hide it. Touch and hold the app, tap Require Face ID, then Hide and Require Face ID. It moves to the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library. Apple describes this as a privacy feature, so it adds a step but doesn't stop you.

Turn off its notifications. Go to Settings › Notifications, tap the app and turn off Allow Notifications, or put it in a Scheduled Summary.

Set the hours

On iOS 26, go to Settings › Screen Time › Downtime, tap Scheduled and set your detox hours, for example evenings or one day of the weekend with Customize Days. Set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at Downtime, or Apple's default lets you keep using the apps. On iOS 27 the same idea is a Screen Time Schedule with Time Allowances.

Keep messages, drop the feeds (minulo)

  1. Name the behavior. Pick the one habit to cut, such as Reels between classes or Shorts in bed, instead of avoiding everything.
  2. Remove the cue. Remove the app from the Home Screen, or hide it, and turn off its notifications.
  3. Set the hours. Schedule Downtime for your detox hours, set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at Downtime.
  4. Hide Reels and Shorts in minulo. Install minulo, sign in to Instagram, YouTube or TikTok inside it, and turn off Reels, Explore, suggested posts, Shorts and For You. DMs keep working. Hiding is free.
  5. Lock the official apps. In minulo's Block tab, allow Screen Time and choose the official apps. A free block lasts up to 2 hours, and you can start another when it ends.

minulo Pro (US $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year) adds blocks longer than 2 hours, schedules by day and time and Hard Mode.

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. minulo is for iPhone, with a Mac version that works in Safari and Chrome, and there is no Android version yet. It is new, with few ratings. Does a dopamine detox actually work?

It doesn't lower dopamine. Harvard Health says dopamine doesn't decrease when you avoid overstimulating activities. The part that can help is behavioral: limiting a specific habit at specific times.

What is the best dopamine detox app for iPhone?

Start with Screen Time, which is built in and free: a Downtime schedule with Block at Downtime. If the habit is Reels, Shorts or TikTok, minulo hides those feeds and keeps DMs, and hiding is free.

Do I have to give up my phone completely?

No. Harvard Health's article criticizes extreme versions that cut out healthy things, and says avoiding human interaction was never part of the original idea. Keep messages and calls; cut the feeds.

Is there a free dopamine detox app?

Screen Time is built into iPhone and free. minulo is free to download, hiding Reels and Shorts is free, and locking the official apps is free for up to 2 hours per block.

Is minulo free?

Downloading minulo and hiding Reels and Shorts are free. Locking the official apps is free for up to 2 hours per block. minulo Pro adds longer blocks, schedules and Hard Mode.
