How to turn off recommendations on Reddit: home feed, communities and trending notifications (2026)
Reddit does let you turn off home feed recommendations. In the app, open your account settings, scroll down to Privacy and turn off Show recommendations in home feed. On reddit.com the same toggle is in your preferences. Reddit says these recommendations appear when Home is sorted by Best. The toggle is about Home only: the Popular feed, community suggestions and trending post notifications are separate. If you'd rather not see Popular at all, minulo opens Reddit with Popular, r/all and suggested posts hidden, for free.
Written by Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo. Facts about Reddit come from Reddit Help pages listed below, checked on 2026-10-24. Menu names can change with app updates.
| Method | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Show recommendations in home feed (Account settings › Privacy) | Stops recommended posts from communities you haven't joined in Home. | Home only. Popular is a separate feed. |
| Show fewer posts like this (on a recommended post) | Stops recommendations from that community and shows fewer from similar ones. | One community at a time. |
| Mute a community | Keeps it out of Home, Popular and notifications. | Up to 1,000 communities. |
| Trending posts off (Manage Notifications) | Stops notifications about popular posts from communities you visited. | All or nothing, not per community. |
| Latest feed (app) / New sort (web) | Your subscriptions, newest first. | You switch to it yourself. |
| minulo (free) | Opens Reddit with Popular, r/all and suggested posts hidden. Subscribed and Messages stay. | Only inside minulo. The official app doesn't change. |
Turn off home feed recommendations in the Reddit app
- Tap your avatar to open your profile.
- Tap the menu (three lines) near the top right, then Settings.
- Tap your username under Account Settings.
- Scroll down to Privacy.
- Turn off Show recommendations in home feed.
Reddit's recommendations article only says "go to your account settings and scroll down to Privacy". Steps 1 to 3 are the way into account settings that Reddit gives for iOS in its notifications article. On reddit.com, open your preferences and turn off the same toggle.
Reddit says home feed recommendations are machine-learning picks that show up when your home feed is sorted by Best. They highlight the post rather than the community and tell you why you are seeing it.
What the switch doesn't cover
Reddit's help describes the toggle only for your home feed. It also lists other places that recommend things to you: the Popular feed (the default for people who aren't logged in), the Explore Communities page in the app, trending topics in search, and Trending posts notifications about popular posts from communities you visited recently.
If Home still feels full of strangers, look at your sort too. On reddit.com you can sort Home by New, Hot, Top or Rising, and the mobile apps have a Latest feed with your subscriptions sorted by New.
Stop trending post notifications
- Tap your avatar, the menu (three lines), then Settings.
- Tap your username under Account Settings, then Manage Notifications.
- Scroll to Recommendations and turn off Trending posts.
Reddit says you can't switch these off for a single community, only all at once.
Mute the communities that keep showing up
On a recommended post, tap the overflow menu and choose Show fewer posts like this. Reddit then stops recommending that community and shows fewer posts from similar ones, and in the app you also get an option to mute it.
Muting a community keeps it out of your notifications, your home feed (recommendations included) and Popular. Use the overflow menu on the community page and choose Mute r/[community name], or manage the list under Manage muted communities in the safety section of your account settings. The limit is 1,000 communities. If you later turn notifications on for a muted community, it comes off the muted list.
Hide Popular and suggested posts with minulo
minulo is an iPhone app that opens Reddit's website inside the app. The Popular and suggested posts switch hides links to r/popular and r/all along with recommended posts, and Only communities you've joined also hides News and Explore. Subscribed and Messages open straight from the minulo home screen. Hiding is free.
If you keep opening the official Reddit app out of habit, minulo can lock it with Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block. While it is locked, Reddit's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Schedules, longer blocks, Hard Mode and multiple block lists are in minulo Pro. There is no Android version.
Can you turn off recommendations on Reddit?
Yes, for your home feed. Reddit's help says you can turn off the toggle Show recommendations in home feed: in the app it is in your account settings under Privacy, and on reddit.com it is in your preferences. Reddit describes this as stopping recommended content from communities you aren't subscribed to in your home feed. Other places, such as the Popular feed and trending notifications, have their own settings.
Where is Show recommendations in home feed on iPhone?
Open your account settings in the Reddit app and scroll down to Privacy. Reddit's help gives the way into account settings on iOS as: tap your avatar, tap the menu (three lines), choose Settings, then tap your username under Account Settings.
Why do I still see communities I don't follow on Reddit?
Check whether you are on Home or on Popular. Popular shows the most upvoted recent posts across Reddit, whatever you follow. Reddit also says that for newer accounts or accounts with few subscriptions, its models may lean more on recommendations. Turning off Show recommendations in home feed covers Home only, and Reddit's help says recommendations appear when Home is sorted by Best.
How do I stop recommended subreddits from coming back?
Tap the overflow menu on a recommended post and choose Show fewer posts like this. Reddit says it then stops recommending posts from that community and shows fewer from similar ones. To hide a community completely from Home, Popular and notifications, mute it. You can mute up to 1,000 communities.
How do I turn off Reddit trending notifications?
In the app, tap your avatar, the menu (three lines), Settings, then your username under Account Settings, and tap Manage Notifications. Under Recommendations, switch off Trending posts. On reddit.com it is Settings, Notifications, Recommendations, Trending Posts. You can't turn them off for just one community.
