Screen Time Downtime not blocking Instagram on iPhone? 5 causes (2026)

If Instagram still opens during Downtime, the usual cause is that Block at Downtime is off. Apple says Downtime then shows only a reminder and lets you continue. Turn it on under Settings › Screen Time › Downtime, which requires a Screen Time passcode. Then check that Instagram is not in Always Allowed, that someone else holds the passcode, and that Scheduled is on for the right days. On iOS 27, Apple's guide uses Screen Time Schedules instead of Downtime, and they need iOS 27 on all your Apple devices.

Written by Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo. The steps come from the Apple Support pages listed below, checked on 2026-10-25. Screens differ between iOS 26 and iOS 27.

1. Turn on Block at Downtime (iOS 26)

Apple notes that by default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once they are reached. For Downtime this means: with Block at Downtime off, you see a reminder that it's downtime, but you can choose to keep using the app. With it on, restricted apps can't be opened during downtime. They appear dimmed with an hourglass icon.

  1. Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. If you have no passcode yet, scroll down, tap Lock Screen Time Settings, and enter a four-digit passcode twice.
  3. Tap Downtime, then turn on Block at Downtime.

Apple says you choose between blocked and dimmed once you have set a Screen Time passcode, so if you don't see the switch, set the passcode first.

2. Take Instagram out of Always Allowed

Apple describes Always Allowed as the apps you can use at all times, even during downtime. If Instagram is on that list, Downtime will never stop it. Go to Screen Time › Always Allowed and remove Instagram from Allowed Apps. On iOS 27, tap Edit in Always Allowed and remove it there.

3. Don't keep the passcode yourself

The Screen Time passcode is what has to be entered before Screen Time settings can be changed. If you set it yourself and remember it, nothing stops you from typing it in at night. Asking a friend or family member to set it is the simple fix. This is our suggestion, not Apple's. For children, Apple suggests that if a child learns their Screen Time passcode, you change it and turn on Downtime for the rest of the day.

4. Check the schedule itself

Go to Screen Time › Downtime. Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow works only once. For every night, turn on Scheduled and choose Every Day or Customize Days, then the start and end times. With Customize Days, each day of the week has its own times, so check the weekend too. Apple's steps also say to turn on App & Website Activity if it is not on yet.

When downtime is scheduled, a reminder comes 5 minutes before it starts, and you can ignore it or start downtime right away. Whether Instagram is actually blocked after that still depends on Block at Downtime.

5. On iOS 27: Screen Time Schedules

In Apple's iOS 27 guide, the page on Screen Time schedules no longer covers Downtime. It covers Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances instead. You go to Screen Time › Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, tap Add Schedule, and choose which Time Allowance categories, such as Social Media, are available in each time window.

Apple says these features need iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 or later on all your Apple devices, and in a Family Sharing group every device must be upgraded. If an iPad or Mac is still on an older version, update it. Always Allowed still applies here: apps on it stay available regardless of schedules and allowances.

If you only want Reels gone at night

Downtime stops the whole Instagram app, so DMs stop too. minulo opens Instagram's official website inside the app with the Reels tab, Reels in the feed and Explore hidden, and DMs keep working. Hiding is free. minulo can also lock the official Instagram app with Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block, and minulo Pro adds schedules by day and time, longer blocks and Hard Mode. While the official app is locked, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo does not send any.

minulo's lock uses iPhone Screen Time too, so if Screen Time itself is not working on your iPhone, that part may not work either. minulo is for iPhone only, and it is made by the author of this page.

Why does Downtime not block Instagram?

Usually because Block at Downtime is off, so Downtime only shows a reminder and lets you continue. Turn it on under Screen Time, Downtime. It needs a Screen Time passcode. Also check that Instagram is not in Always Allowed.

Why can I still open apps during Downtime?

Apps in Always Allowed stay available during downtime. Without Block at Downtime, other apps show a reminder that you can skip. With Block at Downtime on, restricted apps are dimmed with an hourglass and cannot be opened.

Where is Block at Downtime?

Settings, Screen Time, Downtime. Apple says you can choose to block apps completely during downtime once you have set a Screen Time passcode, so set one first with Lock Screen Time Settings.

Where did Downtime go in iOS 27?

In Apple's iOS 27 guide, the schedules page covers Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances instead of Downtime. Go to Screen Time, Screen Time Schedule, and turn on Schedule. These need iOS 27 or later on all your Apple devices.

Can Downtime block only Instagram Reels?

No. Downtime works on whole apps, so DMs are blocked too. To hide only Reels, open Instagram in an app that hides them. In minulo this is free and DMs keep working.
