How to take a social media break while traveling and keep maps and messages (iPhone, 2026)

minulo hides Reels, Shorts and other feeds for free while your DMs keep working, and it can lock the official Instagram, TikTok or YouTube app for free, up to 2 hours per block, so friends can still reach you on a trip without the feeds. On iPhone itself, you can download offline maps in Apple Maps, turn off cellular data for single apps so they work only on Wi-Fi, and use Downtime with your messaging and map apps in Always Allowed. minulo opens each network's website, so it needs Wi-Fi or cellular data like the website does.

Before you leave: download offline maps

  1. Open the Maps app.
  2. Tap your picture or initials next to the search field, tap Offline Maps, then Add Offline Map, and enter the place or tap Current Location.
  3. Adjust the area and tap Download.

Apple says that with an offline map you can still see place details such as hours and ratings, get turn-by-turn directions and see your arrival time, even without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Offline maps aren't available in all countries or regions, so check before the trip.

Keep the feeds on Wi-Fi only

  1. Open Settings and tap Cellular.
  2. Scroll down to the list of apps and turn off Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Apple says that when cellular data is off for an app, iPhone uses only Wi-Fi for it. Out on the street the feeds stop loading, while Maps and your messaging app keep working. Apple also suggests turning off Data Roaming under Cellular Data Options to avoid roaming charges, but that cuts cellular internet for every app abroad, so plan for Wi-Fi, an international plan or a travel eSIM.

Downtime for the trip

  1. In Settings, Screen Time, Always Allowed, add Maps, your messaging apps and anything you need for tickets.
  2. Tap Downtime, then Turn On Downtime Until Tomorrow each morning, or turn on Scheduled for the trip's hours.
  3. Set a Screen Time passcode and turn on Block at Downtime if you want the other apps fully blocked.

Apple says that during downtime only calls, messages and the apps you allow are available. For a longer break from the feeds, see a one-week digital detox without going offline.

Keep messages, drop the feeds with minulo

  1. Add Instagram, TikTok or YouTube in minulo and turn on what to hide, such as Reels and Explore, Shorts or the For You feed.
  2. Use DMs inside minulo to stay in touch with friends at home.
  3. Lock the official apps in the Block tab, free for up to 2 hours per block. minulo Pro adds schedules by day and time and longer blocks.

Hiding is free with no time limit. minulo opens each network's website inside the app, so it needs a connection, the same as the website.

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. minulo is for iPhone, with a Mac version that works in Safari and Chrome, and there is no Android version yet. It is new, with few ratings. How do I take a social media break on vacation but keep messaging?

Hide the feeds with minulo, which is free and keeps your DMs, or lock the official apps with it for up to 2 hours per block. Built in, Downtime with your messaging and map apps in Always Allowed keeps only those available.

Can I use maps without data while traveling?

In Apple Maps, yes: download an offline map before you go. Apple says offline maps aren't available in all countries or regions.

How do I stop Instagram from using data abroad?

Go to Settings, tap Cellular, scroll to the list of apps and turn Instagram off. Apple says the app then uses only Wi-Fi.

Should I turn off Data Roaming?

Apple suggests turning off Data Roaming to avoid roaming charges while traveling. That stops cellular internet for every app outside your carrier's network, so plan for Wi-Fi, an international plan or a travel eSIM.

Will I get messages during Downtime?

Apple says that during downtime only calls, messages and the apps you choose to allow are available. Add the messaging apps you use to Always Allowed.

Does minulo work offline?

No. minulo opens each network's website inside the app, so it needs Wi-Fi or cellular data, the same as the website.
