How to temporarily deactivate Instagram on iPhone, and when blocking is better (2026)
To temporarily deactivate Instagram on iPhone, go to your profile › Menu › Accounts Center › Manage account, tap Manage next to your Instagram profile, then Deactivation or deletion › Deactivate account. Your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you log back in, and you can only do this once a week. Logging back in is what reactivates the account, so you can't deactivate and still check your DMs. If you mainly want to stop scrolling Reels, blocking the app or hiding Reels leaves your account and messages as they are.

| Option | What happens | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Deactivate (temporary) | Your profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden until you log back in. | Once a week. Logging in to check DMs ends it. |
| Delete (permanent) | Your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are removed for good. | After 30 days from the request it is permanent. Export your data first. |
| Block the app with Screen Time | Your account stays as it is. The Instagram app just won't open. | DMs are blocked too. You can turn it off yourself unless someone else holds the passcode. |
| minulo (free, iPhone) | Opens Instagram's website with Reels and Explore hidden, so you can keep DMs. | If the official app is locked, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none. |
How to deactivate Instagram on iPhone
Instagram is moving accounts to Accounts Center, so you will see one of two layouts. If you see Manage accounts at the bottom of Accounts Center:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap Menu at the top right.
- Tap Accounts Center, then Manage account.
- Tap Manage next to the profile you want to deactivate.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion, then choose the profile.
- Tap Deactivate account, then Continue, and follow the steps to confirm.
If you see Accounts at the bottom instead, go to Accounts Center › Personal details › Account ownership and control › Deactivation or deletion, pick the profile and follow the steps. You need to be able to log in to do this, and you can also do it from a computer or a mobile browser.
What happens while it is deactivated
Instagram's help says your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate. There is no end date to pick: the account stays deactivated until you log back in. You can deactivate only once a week, so if you log back in on day two, you wait before you can deactivate again.
We couldn't find in Instagram's help what your DM threads look like to other people while you are deactivated, so we don't describe it here.
How to reactivate Instagram
Log back in with your username and password. That is the whole process, and it is also the weak point: if Instagram is still on your phone, one tap on the icon is enough to end the break.
Deactivate, delete or block: which fits?
Deactivation suits a real break from being seen, for example during exams or after a breakup. Deletion is for leaving for good: after 30 days from the request, your profile and information are permanently deleted (the number of days you can cancel varies by region, and Instagram says the whole process can take up to 90 days). If what you actually want is fewer hours on Reels, neither is needed. Screen Time can stop the app, and the account, followers and messages stay untouched. We compared these options in more depth in hide, block or delete.
Take a break from Reels without deactivating (minulo)
A common reason people deactivate is that they lose hours to Reels but still need Instagram for a class group chat or friends. Deactivation forces a choice between the two. minulo opens Instagram's official website inside an iPhone app with the Reels and Explore tabs and suggested posts hidden, while Messages works as usual. Hiding is free. minulo can also lock the official app with Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block; longer blocks, schedules and Hard Mode are in minulo Pro.
What it can't do: while the official app is locked, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends no notifications. Stories posting, voice messages and calls aren't available in minulo. It is iPhone only, with no Android version.
