Does grayscale on iPhone reduce scrolling? How to set it up, and what it doesn't change (2026)
Apple doesn't say grayscale cuts screen time. It describes Color Filters as an accessibility setting that can show the whole screen in grayscale, and we found no official source saying it makes you scroll less, so treat it as an experiment. Turn it on in Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Color Filters, then use the Accessibility Shortcut (triple-click the side button) or Back Tap to switch it quickly. Grayscale only changes colors. Reels, Shorts, autoplay and notifications stay as they are. If you want Reels and Shorts gone, minulo hides them for free and your DMs keep working.

| Way to switch grayscale | How | What we could confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Settings | Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Color Filters, turn on Color Filters, choose Grayscale. | Apple documents these steps. |
| Accessibility Shortcut | Triple-click the side button (or Home button). Set it in Settings › Accessibility › Accessibility Shortcut. | Apple doesn't list every feature you can pick. Check that Color Filters is in the list on your iPhone. |
| Back Tap | Double or triple tap the back of iPhone. Set it in Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Back Tap. | Apple says Back Tap can turn on an accessibility feature or run a shortcut. |
| Shortcuts automation | An App trigger runs when you open a chosen app. | Apple documents the App trigger, but not a color filter action by name. |
Turn on grayscale
- Open Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size.
- Tap Color Filters and turn on Color Filters.
- Tap Grayscale.
Apple describes this as a filter that can show the entire screen in grayscale, adjust colors for color vision deficiencies, or tint the screen. Apple also notes that color filters can change the look of images and videos.
Put it on a triple-click or Back Tap
Accessibility Shortcut: go to Settings › Accessibility › Accessibility Shortcut and select the features you want. Then triple-click the side button (on iPhone with Face ID) or the Home button. Apple says that if you pick only one feature, the triple-click turns it on or off right away. If you pick several, you choose from a menu. Apple's page doesn't list every feature that can go on the shortcut, so check that Color Filters is there on your iPhone.
Back Tap: go to Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Back Tap, choose Double Tap or Triple Tap, and pick an action. Apple says Back Tap can turn on an accessibility feature or run a shortcut. To turn it off, pick None.
You can also add accessibility controls to Control Center. Apple says there are categories of controls for accessibility and vision when you tap Add a Control.
Can grayscale turn on when you open Instagram?
Apple's Shortcuts guide has an App trigger with Is Opened and Is Closed options, so an automation can run when you open or leave a chosen app. Apple lists the App trigger among the automations that can run without asking you first. What Apple's guide doesn't do is name an action that switches color filters, so we could not confirm this part. If you build it, look for a color filter action in the Shortcuts action list on your iPhone.
What grayscale doesn't change
Grayscale changes how colors are drawn on the screen. It doesn't change what apps show you. Instagram still has the Reels tab, YouTube still has Shorts, the next video still plays when you swipe, and notifications still arrive. Apple notes one thing worth knowing: Night Shift removes inverted colors and color filter effects, except grayscale. So grayscale stays on at night even when Night Shift starts.
As for whether gray makes scrolling less tempting, Apple's pages don't make that claim, and we did not find an official source that does. If you try it, look at Screen Time's report for the app before and after a week rather than going by feel.
What minulo does and doesn't do
If the color isn't really the problem and the endless feed is, minulo goes after the feed instead. It opens the official websites of Instagram, YouTube and other services inside the app with Reels, Explore, Shorts and suggested posts hidden, while DMs keep working. Hiding is free. minulo has no grayscale setting of its own.
minulo can also lock the official apps with iPhone Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block. While an official app is locked, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo doesn't send any. minulo Pro adds schedules by day and time, blocks over 2 hours, multiple block lists and Hard Mode. minulo is iPhone only, doesn't change the official apps, and is made by the person who wrote this page.
