How to stop scrolling Instagram Reels at night on iPhone (2026)
iPhone's Screen Time Downtime can stop Instagram at night, but it blocks the whole app, DMs included, and Instagram's own Sleep mode (once called Quiet mode) only mutes notifications. minulo hides Reels and Explore for free while your DMs keep working, and it can lock the official Instagram app at bedtime with Screen Time: free blocks last up to 2 hours, and a nightly automatic schedule is part of Pro.
Most guides for this search tell you how to pause a Reel. That doesn't help when the problem is the next one and the one after that. Instagram has no setting that turns off Reels on adult accounts, so at night you can either block the whole app with Screen Time or open Instagram somewhere Reels aren't there. If you want to keep messages, open Instagram in minulo with Reels and Explore hidden (free) and lock the official Instagram app when you get into bed.
- Install minulo, tap Add a service on the home screen and choose Instagram.
- Tap the gear next to Instagram and turn on Hide the Reels tab and Hide Explore. This is free, and DMs keep working.
- When you get into bed, lock the official Instagram app in minulo's Block tab with Screen Time, free for up to 2 hours per block. Its icon then shows a block screen with an Open in minulo button.
- For a lock every night, use a schedule in minulo Pro, or Downtime with Block at Downtime (which blocks DMs too).

| Method | What happens at night | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep mode (Instagram, formerly Quiet mode) | Pauses notifications on a schedule, auto-replies to DMs and shows a reminder to close the app | A reminder. You can still open Instagram and watch Reels |
| Daily time limit (Instagram) | Reminds you when you reach the time you set | A reminder. Nothing is locked |
| Downtime + Block at Downtime (iOS 26) | Instagram can't be opened during the hours you set | Blocks the whole app, DMs too. A passcode you chose yourself can be undone |
| Screen Time Schedule (iOS 27) | A night time window with the Time Allowance categories you allow | Needs iOS 27 on all your Apple devices. Whole apps |
| Sleep Focus | Filters notifications and calls | Doesn't block apps |
| minulo | Instagram opens with Reels and Explore hidden (free); the official app can be locked for up to 2 hours per free block; with Pro, a schedule such as 10 PM to 6 AM turns the block on every night | Notifications from a locked official app don't arrive |
What iPhone and Instagram can do at night
Sleep mode is Instagram's own night setting. Go to your profile, tap Menu at the top right, then Time management › Sleep mode, and pick the days and hours. Meta launched it as Quiet mode in January 2023 and renamed it later. While it is on, Instagram pauses your notifications and sends an auto-reply to people who message you. It does not lock the app, so you can still open Reels at 1 a.m. Teen Accounts are put in Sleep mode from 10 PM to 7 AM by default.
To actually stop Instagram, use Downtime in iPhone Screen Time:
- Go to Settings › Screen Time › Downtime › Scheduled and set a start and end time, for example 11 PM to 7 AM.
- Set a Screen Time passcode, then turn on Block at Downtime. Without it, you only see a reminder.
- Make sure Instagram is not under Always Allowed.
On iOS 27 the same idea is called Screen Time Schedule. Either way it blocks the whole app, so group chats and DMs stop too, and if you chose the passcode yourself you can type it half asleep.
A normal night
You are a student, it is past midnight and the lights are off. A friend sends a message about tomorrow's class, you open Instagram to answer, and a Reel is already playing. You reply, then swipe once, then again. Sleep mode muted the notification, but you were the one who opened the app. Downtime would have stopped the Reels, but it would also have stopped the reply. In minulo's own anonymous usage data, most social media sessions happen between 8 pm and 1 am (Japan time, where most of the data comes from), so this is the hour to plan for.
Stop Reels at night in minulo, step by step
- Tap Add a service on minulo's Home screen and choose Instagram. minulo opens Instagram's website inside the app, so you log in with your usual account.
- Tap the gear next to Instagram. Under Reels and Explore tabs, turn on Hide the Reels tab and Hide Explore. If you want nothing but messages at night, choose Every tab but DMs. All of this is free.
- Open the Block tab, choose the official Instagram app under Apps to block and start a block when you get into bed. A free block lasts up to 2 hours and you can start another right away.
- If you tap the Instagram icon out of habit, a block screen appears. Tap Open in minulo to answer your DMs without Reels.
- With minulo Pro, a schedule turns the block on at the same time every night, blocks can run longer than 2 hours, and Hard Mode makes turning it off take effort. If you also use Downtime, add minulo to Always Allowed so messages stay open.
What minulo can't do
minulo can't change the official Instagram app, so Reels are hidden only inside minulo. While minulo blocks the official app, its notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. If you need to hear about DMs at night, leave the official app unlocked and use Sleep mode instead. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available, because Instagram's website doesn't have them. minulo runs on iPhone and Mac (the Mac app works in Safari and Chrome), not Android, and it is new, with few ratings. Does Instagram have a bedtime mode?
Yes, Sleep mode, which used to be called Quiet mode. It pauses notifications and auto-replies to DMs during the hours you pick, but you can still open Instagram and watch Reels. minulo hides Reels and Explore for free if you want them gone at night.
How do I block Instagram at night but keep DMs?
Screen Time can't do that, because it blocks the whole app. In minulo, open Instagram with Reels and Explore hidden, or with Every tab but DMs, and lock the official app at night. While it is locked, its notifications don't arrive.
Can minulo block Instagram automatically every night?
Yes, with minulo Pro: Sleep mode turns the block on by itself every night at your bedtime and off at your wake time. On the free plan you start a block yourself, up to 2 hours each time.
