Turn on a Safari extension on iPhone

  1. Open Safari, tap the page menu button, then tap Manage Extensions.
  2. Search for an extension or tap Browse Extensions to look in the App Store, then tap Get.
  3. Go to Settings, tap Apps, then Safari, then Extensions. Tap the extension and turn on Allow Extension.
  4. Open the extension's own app and turn on the parts you want hidden.

Nope's App Store page adds that you turn it on for instagram.com and youtube.com in that same Extensions screen. The extension then works when you open those sites in Safari.

How the extensions differ

Price. Only Nope is free with nothing to buy. ScrollGuard is free to download, and its App Store page lists four ScrollGuard Pro purchases without saying which period each one covers. #blockit starts with a 7-day free trial and then needs a subscription. The three YouTube-only extensions are paid up front.

Sites. Nope covers Instagram and YouTube. #blockit lists six sites, including Reddit, where it can block the home feed, subreddit feeds or comments. ScrollGuard's description says "social media websites" without a list, and its release notes name Instagram, X and TikTok. Shorts Blocker for YouTube, No Shorts and BlockYT are for YouTube only.

iOS. ScrollGuard needs iOS 18 and is listed for iPhone only. Nope and #blockit need iOS 17. The YouTube-only extensions run on iOS 15 or 16.

How they handle your data. #blockit says it is a pure Safari content blocker, a kind of extension Apple designed so it cannot read or send anything from the pages you visit. Nope says it has no account and no server, and every setting stays on your device. No Shorts says it has no tracking and no data collection.

Ratings. Nope had 2 US ratings and No Shorts had 15 on 2026-10-26, so there is little to judge them by yet.

What a Safari extension can't do

An extension works only on websites you open in Safari. If the Instagram or YouTube app is still on your phone, Reels and Shorts are still in the app. No Shorts and Shorts Blocker for YouTube say this on their App Store pages: the YouTube app is not affected.

So an extension helps most if you delete the app and use the website instead. What changes when you do that is on deleting the Instagram app and using Safari and YouTube in Safari without Shorts.

If you want them gone outside Safari too: minulo

minulo is an iPhone app, not a Safari extension. It opens the official websites of 10 networks inside the app and hides Reels, Shorts and suggested posts, free with no time limit. If you keep opening the official apps out of habit, it can lock them with Screen Time.

  1. Install minulo, open Instagram or YouTube inside it and log in on the network's own login page. minulo does not receive or store your password.
  2. Tap the gear next to the network and turn on the parts you want hidden.
  3. Optional: in the Block tab, lock the official Instagram, YouTube or TikTok app with Screen Time. Tapping its icon shows a block screen with an Open in minulo button. Free blocks last up to 2 hours each.

Limits, so you can decide honestly: Reels and Shorts are hidden only inside minulo, and the official apps don't change. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own. Posting Stories, voice messages and calls aren't available. It runs on iPhone and Mac, plus Chrome and Safari extensions, not Android. Its privacy policy describes the Safari extension's settings as stored on your Mac, and this page doesn't cover what that extension hides. minulo is new, with few ratings. See what minulo can't do.
